Behaviour in primary schools

Having been teaching for 28 years, I have learned to go with the flow and changes that normally affect education in our primary schools here in the UK. However, in the last few years, I have noticed a change in the behaviour of primary school children. Not all of them, but such a significant few that it has begun to affect the learning of the others.

When a child can disrupt a class so badly, that the teacher and the teaching assistant have to spend a lot of their time supervising the individual, then questions have to be asked as to what has made the child so unmanageable.

The NUT (National Union of Teachers), at their conference last week, suggested that this bad behaviour was a reflection of poor parenting skills. I couldn't agree more.

I do accept that there are the exceptions where children have been medically diagnosed with ADHD, or more severe forms of Autism, and in these cases allowances can be made, and the school usually has systems in place to cope with these individuals.

However, bad behaviour is sometimes just that.

Not long ago I was shopping in Safeways when I heard a child of four shouting at the top of its voice at the parent because she would not buy him any more sweets. The mother's reply was, "wait until you get to school, they'll sort you out". As if it was our job to sort out the behaviour of her child! No, I am sorry, I am there to educate, not to 'sort out' the behaviour that some parents fail to see is their responsibility. We live in a pass the buck society, and I am at a loss to see where we will go from here
